Enhance Your Meditation Sessions With Music

Everyone has a playlist full of soothing tunes tucked away somewhere that relaxes them in times of need. Meditation is also another activity people engage in to attain a sense of calm. Listening to certain types of music is believed to have the same effect as meditating.

Could listening to music actually enhance your meditation sessions and help you reach a deeper state of relaxation? Let’s take a look at some meditation techniques and find out.

Meditation Techniques and Music

Most music focuses on creating a playful dynamic between building tension and following it up with a release to provide a feeling of catharsis. Meditative music is generally devoid of this tension-release

Music that doesn’t feature sudden shifts in tone or changes in its melodies would be best for this purpose.

Three kinds of meditation that could be enhanced by the use of external sounds such as music are Mindfulness meditation, Focused meditation and Movement meditation.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation can be performed by paying attention to your thoughts as they pass through your mind without engaging with them. You could pair this technique with light repetitive music that doesn’t draw your attention away from your thoughts.

Focused Meditation

Focused meditation is performed by focusing your attention on one of your senses for an extended period of time. This could include staring at a candle flame, or listening to the sound s of your environment. Adding some ethereal-sounding ambient music to the mix could also enhance your focused meditation experience.

Put on a comfy pair of headphone and focus your hearing on observing the gradual shift in tones and evolution of textures within songs. Listen to the interaction of the layers of sound with one another and notice how they fill up the soundstage. Focused listening can be an incredibly relaxing experience with the right music.

Movement Meditation

Movement meditation involves gentle forms of motion such as yoga or walking. This can be paired with any form of music that you feel best matches the pace and tone of your activities without disrupting them.
Other forms of meditation such as Spiritual meditation require silence, while Mantra and Transcendental meditation involve chanting mantras in the absence of other sounds. Your ability to focus in these meditation techniques could be hindered by external sounds, so they should not be paired with music

At the end of the day, music is subjective. What works for one person may not work as well for others. Be sure to try out different kinds of music to see which pairs best with your preferred form of meditation.
